We have the internet at our fingertips 24 hours a day, every day and yet most of us don't really think of buying larger items, like cheap furniture online. To me furniture is like shoes - I have to try them on first to see if they are a comfortable fit and that they look good and the same applies for furniture. I want to sit on a sofa or chair to gauge its comfort level for me. Yes, I know you can send stuff back but that is a hassle for me for shoes, let alone a sofa! Imagine packing it up, etc.

However, many people do in fact shop online for larger items. In fact amazon has encouraged us to do that when it started selling everything under the proverbial sink and not just books and CDs. Amazon is actually a great place to start your search as they do work on maintaining competitive prices on everything they carry. In fact you can sometimes get things even cheaper in the used and new offerings from the Amazon Marketplace or Merchant sellers.

On the other hand, renowned furniture stores, like IKEA do have websites where you can check out the prices and availability at different stores. Other stores like Sears also offer online shopping and give details of the specific item. With Walmart you can order online and the item will be shipped to your local store.

The beauty of online shopping is that you can find out practically everything about the furniture piece you are looking for like dimensions, color choice, etc. If the website you want to actually buy from doesn't give all the details, simply put the item model number in Google and you'll probably find more sites that you want to visit with all sorts of information.

Certainly doing research for cheap furniture online is a smart move. You can be sure to find lots of information about the product you are looking for as well as price, warranty and delivery options. Still, after maybe settling on a particular model, I would still look locally to see if I could physically see it, but that's just me. Then I would settle for the cheapest price I could get - whether online or offline.

With online research you can start with as little as the name of the furniture piece - for example, coffee table or sectional sofa. If you put this in Google you will come up with more websites than you can handle and usually the first page is enough for you to settle on a piece and then narrow it down with model number for prices.
