Using Tarps As Emergency Shelters PDF Print E-mail

When camping, working outside or recovering from a natural disaster there may come a time when you need an emergency shelter to protect you and others from rain, cold and other outdoor hazards. Sudden storms, temperature drops and high winds can be very dangerous when you are outside and if you don't have a tent, vehicle or building to seek refuge in you can use a heavy duty poly tarp to provide temporary shelter until the storm passes or help arrives.

If you plan on camping for a week chances are you will bring along a high quality tent. But if you are just going into the woods for a night with some friends and only bring sleeping bags you may want to bring along a durable poly tarp just in case. Roughing it can be fun but not when driving rain is soaking your skin. With a well made poly tarp you can at least provide temporary shelter to hide under until severe storms pass. Not recommended for long-term shelter, a commercial grade polyethylene tarp can at least provide a layer of protection for people, motorcycles and equipment to keep dry.

If you work on construction sites you are used to difficult outdoor conditions but some times the weather can be so bad you need to stop work and seek relief. If you don't have access to a truck, building or garage the least you can do is set up a canopy tarp to provide relief from high winds and strong rain. If you have high quality rain suits and boots you can always use a tarp to cover machinery, equipment and supplies including tools, lumber and paint.

No one expects a natural disaster but hurricanes, earthquakes and tornadoes are a fact of life and when one strikes you will need to be prepared for hours and perhaps days with out electricity, a roof or even a house. Natural disasters can cause incredible damage in a short period of time and if an earthquake should buckle your home or a hurricane rips off your roof you can still use a high quality heavy duty tarp to provide instant shelter from rain and sun.

Tarps can be used as temporary fixes for holes in a roof or be set up to act as a canopy tent in case your home is declared unsafe to stay in. Emergency teams respond as fast as they can but if the damage is severe it can take time to reach your location and with a well crafted poly tarp at least you can ward off rain and intense sunlight while waiting for help to arrive.
