How to Choose an Indoor Grill PDF Print E-mail

Nothing beats the flavor of food right off the grill. If I had my way, I would grill my food almost 100% of the time when possible. Grilling serves a much greater purpose than just grilling burgers, dogs and steaks. I like to grill pretty much anything that can be put on there, including vegetables, potatoes, fish and shrimp. But unfortunately where I live it gets quite cold in the wintertime, so I have to put my grill away when it starts to get too cold out.

Finally I got tired of missing the flavor of freshly grilled food so finally this past winter I invested in a fancy indoor grill, and it was a decision I should have made much sooner. So if you are thinking about getting one, it would definitely be a wise choice. Let's look at four questions to ask for how to choose an indoor grill, as there are some important factors you have to take into consideration as I'm sure you know.

1 - How Much Do You Want to Spend?

If you have a limited budget, you can certainly find an indoor grill for cheap. Prices range are anywhere from $20 to $200, depending on how big and feature-rich the grills are. The most expensive ones tend to be standalone units and can be used indoor and outdoor, with a decent sized cooking surface. The cheap ones are small countertop devices that can prepare a meal for maybe a couple people but certainly not the while family.

2 - Do You Need a Large or Small Cooking Surface?

If you will be cooking primarily for yourself then you can find small units that are about 36 square inches in size. Needless to say you'll have a tough time cooking more than one thing on this type of indoor grill.

On the other hand, you can find some that have as much cooking space as 200 square inches. With this size you can cook enough chicken and vegetables to feed an average size family. So if you are cooking for the spouse and kids in addition to yourself, you'll certainly be able to find an indoor grill that meets your needs.

3 - What Features Do You Want?

Features like non-stick cooking surface and drip-catch tray are certainly nice to have, as well as temperature adjustment and simple cleanup. There are some models that advertise the removal of excess fat from the food, but many people don't like this aspect as it reduces the flavor. However if you are watching your waistline then this could be a useful feature to have.

As with any indoor cooking device, safety features are important. Grills that have timers, splash guards and auto shut off mechanisms are nice to prevent burns and fires.

4 - Is the Grill Well-Received?

Finally, when you think you have found your indoor grill of choice, you should doublecheck to make sure it is not a lemon with a lot of bad reviews. Check Amazon for existing feedback for that model or a similar one by the same manufacturer. Also make sure the vendor supplies a decent warranty. For indoor grills, a warranty term of one to two years should be adequate depending on whether it is more towards the high end or low end.

So these are questions to consider for how to choose an indoor grill. If you think you will be getting a lot of use out of it, it might make sense to go with a more expensive one that has more of the features you want included. We hope you find a great indoor grill to enjoy that grilling flavor year-round.
